General information

Children under 14

  • Children under 2 must travel with an adult 18 or older or a parent/legal guardian of any age in the same cabin.
  • Children 2 – 14 can travel as an 'accompanied minor' with someone 15 or older.
  • Children 5 – 14 can travel as an 'unaccompanied minor' with US Airways assistance on nonstop flights only for an additional $100 fee each way.
  • Uniformed employees assist from the point of departure to the final destination, but are not qualified to provide certain types of medical assistance or administer/dispense medication.

Young adults (ages 15 – 17)

  • A traveler 15 – 17 is considered a young adult and may travel unaccompanied on nonstop and connecting flights without US Airways assistance.
  • When the young adult checks in, we’ll make a note in our system so US Airways personnel know a young adult is traveling unaccompanied.
  • A young adult who needs US Airways assistance may travel unaccompanied on nonstop flights only for an additional $100 fee each way.

Bags

We waive the first and second checked bag fees for unaccompanied minors who pay for US Airways assistance. Excess baggage fees apply if 3 or more bags are checked. Baggage fees apply for young adults who travel without US Airways assistance.

Partner airlines

If the flight is operated by a Star Alliance airline or codeshare partner, contact the carrier directly for its unaccompanied minor policies. Additional fees may apply.

Check-in & required documents

You're required to fill out the Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage form at the airport ticket counter on the day of departure. The form must remain with the child during the flight.

Is your child traveling internationally?

Drop-off

When you make the reservation, please note if you plan to drop off or meet an unaccompanied minor. You can get a pass at the ticket counter to accompany the child to the gate (U.S. cities only). Please arrive early and plan to stay in the gate area until the child's flight has departed.

If airport security prohibits non-ticketed passengers from entering the gate area, US Airways personnel will accompany the minor to the gate.

Pickup

You must show a government-issued photo ID when you pick up an unaccompanied minor. You can get a pass at the ticket counter to meet the child at the gate (U.S. cities only).

If a flight changes or is cancelled, we'll call the person meeting the child and arrange alternate transportation if needed. Otherwise, we'll contact the parent/guardian who escorted the child to the departure airport.

Tips & suggestions

Children

  • If the child has not flown before, take a trip to the airport. Point out the identifiable uniforms of US Airways representatives.
  • Introduce the child to the representative at the ticket counter and at the departure gate.
  • Let the gate agent know if the child has never flown before or if he or she has any condition that would require special attention during the flight.
  • Provide the child with proper identification and cash for emergencies. On some flights, meals may be available for purchase.
  • Provide materials to keep the child occupied and entertained during the flight.
  • Keep carry-on luggage to a minimum. Remind the child of the bags that he or she is responsible for. Make sure all bags have an identification tag with the child’s name. Report any losses to US Airways personnel immediately.
  • Arrive at the gate before the scheduled arrival time.
  • Remind the child to ask for assistance only from a uniformed US Airways representative.

Young adults

  • Advise the young adult to ask a uniformed US Airways employee for help finding his or her flight, airline information, family or friends.
  • On request, US Airways will provide unaccompanied minor assistance to young adults 15 - 17. The Unaccompanied Minor Request for Carriage form must be completed, and a $100 fee each way applies.
  • If a flight is delayed or cancelled, US Airways will make alternate travel arrangements.
  • If flights are unavailable until the following day, US Airways can arrange for overnight accommodations at the airport with 2 station employees.
  • Travelers under 18 may not stay in a hotel.
