While we work to integrate the Dividend Miles and AAdvantage programs, Preferred members can upgrade on US Airways and American Airlines operated flights. Different rules apply depending on who's operating your flight.
US Airways operated flights
Preferred upgrades on US Airways are complimentary and subject to availability. We'll process your upgrade and notify you by email automatically.
Preferred upgrades are valid for travel on US Airways marketed and operated flights (codeshare flights excluded) within the contiguous U.S., Alaska, Canada, Central America, Mexico and the Caribbean. Special rules apply for travel to/from Hawaii and Europe.
American operated flights
Preferred upgrades are available on many flights operated by American Airlines.
Here’s how it works:
- If an upgrade is available, you’ll see the option to upgrade when you check in on aa.com, at the kiosk, with an agent at the airport or at the Admirals Club.
- If you have more than one flight and one of your flights is operated by US Airways, you may have to see an agent for your upgrade on the flight operated by American. It all depends on which airline ‘operates’ your first flight and where you check in.
- Chairman’s Preferred? Upgrades are complimentary.
- Platinum, Gold and Silver Preferred? Upgrade for $30 per 500 miles of travel (based on American’s existing upgrade policy)
