Advance notice

In the event that you have both a severe hearing and vision impairment, you must notify US Airways 800-428-4322/TTY 800-245-2966 at least 48 hours in advance and check in one hour before the check-in time for the general public.

If you do not meet the advance notice and check-in requirements, US Airways will still attempt to provide the accommodation if US Airways can do so by making reasonable efforts, without delaying the flight.

Safety assistants

For safety-related reasons, US Airways requires that passengers with severe hearing and severe vision impairments travel with a safety assistant if the passenger cannot establish some means of communication with US Airways personnel that is adequate to both:

  • Permit transmission of the safety briefing required by FAA regulations or the safety regulations of a foreign carrier's government (for international codeshare flights).
  • Assist in his or her own evacuation of the aircraft in the event of an emergency.

Travel without a safety assistant

If you have a severe hearing and vision impairment, and if you wish to travel without a safety assistant, you must call US Airways at 800-428-4322/TTY 800-245-2966 at least 48 hours prior to your scheduled departure to provide this explanation. If you give less than 48 hours notice, we'll do our best to accomodate you to the extent practicable.

If you have a severe hearing and vision impairment, and even if you wish you travel without a safety assistant, US Airways will still require that you travel with a safety assistant if:

  • The means of communication that the passenger has explained to US Airways is not adequate to permit the transmission of the safety briefing required by FAA regulations, and is not adequate to enable the passenger to assist in his or her own evacuation of the aircraft in the event of an emergency.
  • The passenger proposes to establish communication by means of finger spelling and US Airways cannot, within the time following the individual's notification, arrange for a flight crew member who can communicate using this method to serve the passenger's flight.
