Being Preferred

To qualify for the next Preferred level, you'll need to earn a certain number of Preferred-qualifying* miles or segments within a calendar year.

It's easy to earn Preferred-qualifying miles. Just buy a flight on US Airways, American Airlines or any of our airline partners.* And, earn 50% more when you fly First or Business Class.

Once you reach the required number of Preferred-qualifying miles or segments, you'll be automatically upgraded to the next Preferred level and maintain that level until the end of the program year.*** Please allow for up to 7 days for your new status to take effect.

For example, a Silver Preferred member who reached 50,000 Preferred-qualified miles in June 2014 would be upgraded to Gold status and would continue to enjoy that status through February 2016.

In the second quarter of 2015, we’ll reach the next milestone on our path to integration by bringing the Dividend Miles program into the American Airlines AAdvantage® program, creating one of the largest airline loyalty programs in the world.

Million mile flyers

When you fly one million miles with US, we'll upgrade you to Silver Preferred for as long as you remain an active Dividend Miles member.**** To keep your account active, just earn or redeem miles with US Airways or our partners within a consecutive 3-year period.

In the second quarter of 2015, we’ll combine your million mile balances (if you have both a Dividend Miles and AAdvantage® account) or transfer your million mile balance to the AAdvantage program.

Terms & conditions

*The number of Preferred-qualifying miles you'll earn is based on actual miles, or on actual segments flown on qualifying paid tickets, whichever is greater. (There are certain discounted fares, like industry discounts, which don't count toward Preferred status.) However, if you're a Preferred member you will earn a 500 mile minimum per segment. Segments that count toward Preferred status include segments flown under one flight number, regardless of the number of take offs and landings. Only miles earned on American Airlines or oneworld® alliance airlines are Preferred-qualifying miles.

**Chairman’s Preferred status normally requires 100,000 miles or 120 segments. However, in anticipation of combining Dividend Miles with the AAdvantage program in the second quarter of 2015, we are lowering the segment requirement for 2014 to 100 segments to align with the 2014 AAdvantage Executive Platinum threshold. In 2015, 120 segments will be required for both Chairman’s Preferred and AAdvantage Executive Platinum status.

*** Preferred-qualifying miles or segments flown January 1 - December 31, 2014 count toward Preferred status in 2015. 'Program year' is defined as March 1 - February 28.

**** Includes flight miles earned on US Airways, US Airways Express and US Airways Shuttle only. Bonus miles, partner flight miles and other partner miles do not count toward million mile status.
